Rockwool is a natural insulation product and it is produced from Basalt rock from volcanoes. It is melted in a furnace and mixed with a bye product from other processes. Its then spun and cooled to create a wool effect. This product can be used in all aspects of construction projects where thermal, acoustic and fire are requirements. As it is stone based Rockwool insulation is non combustible and can withstand temperatures of more than 1000 degrees Celsius. Put a blow torch next to a piece of Rockwool insulation and it will glow but not burn or melt. That means that Rockwool insulation will act as a barrier against fire slowing the spread of flames. Rockwool insulation is also water repellent, it actually resists water and drains it away. Even when submerged in water it drains away and comes back to its original shape and the interior of the wool comes back to its original state. Rockwool is comprised of inorganic materials and does not promote the growth of mold or mildew.

Another characteristic of Rockwool insulation id to absorb sound to keep your home quiet and comfortable. This box is lined with Rockwool insulation. A load alarm is activated and placed inside the box, the lid is put back on the box and the sound is almost completely eliminated. remove the lid and the alarm is still going. Put the lid back on and the sound is almost gone. Rockwool sound insulation is highly effective in preventing sound transition from room to room thanks to its higher density and non directional fiber insulation which traps sound waves and deadens vibration. Fit is critical to any acoustic insulation. The density and fiber structure makes Rockwool insulation easy to cut and install. Whether cut to fit in between studs or electrical wires or notched to accommodate water and drainage pipes or cut to fit around electrical outlets or switch boxes. It can be quickly and easily which will give a nice snug fit.

Rockwool thermal insulation is ideal for refurbishment and residential projects. Its comes in a convenient range of slabs or rolls to suit all applications and purposes.

Isover Metac G3 Touch is mineral wool insulation with excellent thermal and acoustic performance. Designed to be used in pitch roofs and timber framed construction. Made with natural recycled materials it has been award Eurofins gold the highest award for indoor air quality making it an excellent choice for residential indoor applications. A slab and a roll is metac self supporting and has excellent recovery and strength. Metac is available in a variety of thicknesses and splits for common rafter widths and depths and slabs and rolls.

How to Install;

Measure the width and depth of the rafters and choose the size to suit. Metac excellent strength ensure no slumping during the life of the system. For the best air tightness performance couple the product with Isover Vario as a full system. Our system consists of Vario Extra Safe and Vario Double Fit along with adhesive tapes. When installed with Varion airtight membrane Metac can be installed the full width of the rafters. To improve the thermal performance a 50mm x 50mm counter batten can be installed in the opposite direction with an additional ion between them. This also allows this zone to be used for additional services without penetrating the membrane. Finally use Gyproc plasterboard on the counter battens to complete the installation.

In this video we are going to look at the Rockwool rollbatt product. This product comes in thicknesses up to 150mm which will give you a coverage of 4.32m2 and 100mm which will give you a coverage of 5.76m2 and also 170mm which gives you 3.87m2. This product is quite similar to the standard rollls or batts of insulation you would use such like Knauf Earthwool or Isover G3 SoftTouch. The difference is that the Rockwool product has a fire rating that exceeds the standard glasswool products. The Rockwool product is tested in tempeturs of in excess of 1000 degrees centigrade and will not burn or melt. This product is excellent when used in fire protection applications and also acoustically it is far superior than standard 0.044 loft roll glasswool insulation. So acoustically this product will give you a better performance. If you are building an acoustic wall or music studio or similar or you just have noisy neighbours this is the right product for you. It has the same Lambda values as your standard lof troll insulation's of 0.044 so if you are using this for your attic you will still need 270mm minimum. What you would need to do to achieve this minimum requirement is roll out your 100mm in between your floor joists and then in the opposite direction roll out your 170mm to overlap the joints. By running in the opposite direction on top will avoid any cold bridging that may occur if you run the joints in the same direction.

If you are going to handle this product it is highly recommended that you use gloves and a dust mask and also a boiler suit / overalls. You will end up itchy when you use this product and will cause other irritation to the skin.

This product is more expensive than the standard glasswool insulation for the reasons stated earlier with its acoustic and fire performance. You are paying for a product that does an awful lot more than just insulate. The packaging like all other glasswool packaging is compress packed. So when you cut open the packaging the product will expand to a certain extent and if you give it a bit of a sake the product will expand out to its stated thickness. It is a heavier product so if you are lifting this product do bear in mind that it is heavier than the standard glasswool this is down to the fact that the product is much more dense than standard glasswool. This product can be used in your attics / walls and acoustic rooms like a recording studio etc this is a great product for those applications.

Right now we are going to look at the Rockwool insulation range of RWA45, RW3 and the RW5. As you can see this product range comes in batt format. It is 600mm wide by 1200mm long. Each range whether it is the RWA45, RW3 or the RW5 comes in various thicknesses from 25mm right up to in excess of 100mm thick. Each product has a different m2 coverage with the different thicknesses. If you wish to find out what coverage is in each batt or the batt that you require we have all the coverages on our website at www.insulation4less.co.uk/insulation-materials/acoustic-insulation/rockwool-8.html, each product has its own coverage outlined in the product description when you click into the product name.

With this being a Rockwool product it has a fantastic acoustic performance, it also has a very good fire rating. All Rockwool products are testing to exceed temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees centigrade and this product is fantastic for many fire spread prevention applications also. Also from an acoustic point of view this product is fantastic at dealing with high and low frequencies. The Rockwool products have also been acoustically tested and these tests are highlighted in the product datasheet which is attached to the product on our website.

The Rockwool RW range is quite expensive when compared to standard glasswool roll batts. The reason for this is because this product is more dense than standard glasswool insulation and it is intended for specific applications whereby acoustic or fire performance is required.

This product is easy to handle and move around as it is well packaged and is not very heavy. Rockwool RW range generally will not get damaged on transport due to it being very dense and strong and also the fact it is a wool product which does help. This product is not compress packed like alot of glasswool products and will not expand when opened or the packaging removed. You will need to wear a mask , gloves and a boiler suit if handling this product as it will make you very itch when being installed.

This product is very easy to cut with a handsaw or a sharp knife. Once cut it is generally put in between studs or walls whether this being metal framing or timber studding, this product will fit nicely between those studs.

Right now we are going to have a look at the insulated plasterboard. This board is very similar to the Celotex PL4000 range and also the Ecotherm Ecoliner among others. These boards in in a variety of thicknesses from 29.5mm right up to 102.5mm. So for instance you have a 29mm board, 37.5mm board. 52.5mm board, 62.5mm and so on in increments of 10mm from there on right up to 102.5mm. Thicker boards can be manufactured on request but these would be a special order and would need to ordered well in advance for those boards. The make up of these boards is generally gyproc plasterboard on one side and polyiso insulation on the other. So as you can see this board is very similar to the Celotex PL4000, Ecotherm Ecoliner and the Warmline Polyiso boards. Other variants of this board are available such as a gypsum plasterboard with eps insulation, XPS insulation or even a phenolic insulation attached to it. For now however we are going to look at the polyiso version which is the same as Celotex PL4000, Ecotherm Ecoliner and the Warmline Polyiso boards.

For fixing these boards onto your walls you would generally use a mushroom fixing or insulation fixing. What you would need to do is to drill into the plasterboard with a mechanical drill bit and into your block wall behind. The fixing used is a metal hammer in fixing which I will show you in a few moments. Generally we would recommend 15 fixings per board but this varies from each manufacturer. Its always best to consult the manufacturer's datasheet before you start the project. All datasheets are on our website www.insulation4less.co.uk this will give you a full breakdown of how many mechanical fixings you will need. You can also dot and dab these boards and stick them to the walls using bonding compound. Any good plasterer would be aable to this job for you. We would also recommend you use some metal mushroom fixings again when sticking your board to the wall just to add additional strength to the fixing of the board.

This board is also similar to the Kingspan k17 or k18 board, however this board here is not a phenolic board its a polyiso board. Each board is 1.2m x 2.4m or 2.88m2 each. So if you know how many m2 your wall is its easy to work out how many boards you need. Generally this board is used on internal walls but on the external walls of the building. This board will make a massive difference to the performance of the home when it is installed correctly. Also these boards are heavy and difficult to handle so it is recommended to have help on site when these boards arrive. If it is windy outside and one per son is trying to unload these boards they can break so again it is recommended to have someone there to assist with the off loading.

Here we can see a close up on the metal mushroom fixing. This fixing requires an 8mm drill bit to drill in through your plasterboard and insulation and then into the block wall. You will notice there are some ridges at the end of the fixing to give the fixing grip on the block wall. Here you can also see the make up of the insulated plasterboard with your gypsum plasterboard on one side and the polyiso insulation on the other. You will also see that this board is ready to be mechanically fixed or dat and dabbed onto the wall.
